Sewing Machine Recommendations

There are many factors to consider when choosing a sewing machine to purchase for yourself or your child. At Camp Fashionista, we prioritize safety and user experience.

We use Brother machines almost exclusively for their reliability and ease of learning. You can find an entry-level beginner machine for $150-300, such as the XR9550. Or, you can spend more for a machine that will last many years. The updated version of the model we use in our studio is the NS80e, which retails at $600 new, but you can often find good machines refurbished for a discount.

The main features we look for are a top-loading bobbin, found in most modern computerized machines, and speed control (the slider in the center). This way you can limit how fast the machine sews even while pressing down on the foot pedal all the way. We consider it essential for teaching young children, but you may find controlling the speed with your foot to be easy enough with practice.

The number and diversity of stitches on your machine is not so important for most sewists, as you will mainly use just a straight stitch and some stretch stitches, and quilting or embroidery attachments are not necessary unless you are planning to get into those hobbies.

As far as where to purchase a machine, you may have luck finding them on ebay, Facebook marketplace, or a sewing machine shop like Gordon’s Viking Sewing Center (local) or Ken’s Sewing Center.
